- Description
- During my law studies in the 1990s, I became aware that playing the organ was an ideal counterpoint to the intellectually challenging character of my studies. I regularly spent hours at the organ of St. Martin's in Trier to practice. It was during one of these afternoons that the melody of “Hilf, Herr meines Lebens”, a German hymn, caught my ear. It is quite simple, but I thought that nonetheless, it would be an excellent basis for composing variations. I sketched some first ideas and during the following months added some more until in autumn 1992, I completed the first draft of the present variations. Subsequently, I repeatedly revised them on different other organs until the present version, which is best played on a large organ with French romantic character, was finally completed in autumn 1998. The variations were interpreted for the first time in public by Hans Uwe Hielscher on August 28, 1999 at the Walcker organ of Wiesbaden’s Marktkirche.
The sound sample is a collection of clips of some variations. A complete recording of all variations played by Hans Uwe Hielscher can be found here: https://soundcloud.com/thomasgroh/sets/hilf-herr-meines-lebens.
This piece is published with the kind permission of Gustav Bosse Verlag (Kassel), the copyright owner of both the original melody composed by Hans Puls and these variations.
